Betsy Frost has always been fascinated with metals. When she was little, she recalls enjoying flattening pennies on railroad tracks and stealing her brothers’ fishing sinkers to pound them flat. Her childhood neighbor was a master metalsmith from Germany and she dreamed about following in his footsteps as she watched him work the metals at his studio.
Betsy ended up majoring in psychology instead, but after college she continued pursuing her interest in metalwork and studied silversmithing in Sweden. At age 30, she moved to Boston and decided to become a professional jewelry maker. She graduated with a BA in metals from the Massachusetts College of Art and has been successfully selling her designs wholesale ever since, serving over 200 stores nationwide.
Beginning in 2002, she and her team worked out of her basement in Ipswich. About a year ago, she opened the Betsy Frost Design studio, where she works alongside craftswomen Kim, Donna and Jo-Ann, as well as her three dog helpers: Scarlet, who oversees quality control; Mischa, who is in charge of scheduling vacation time; and Jack, an old-timer who mostly sleeps on the job.
Betsy finds inspiration for her designs in artworks by Matisse and Degas, as well as from her surroundings. “What makes my jewelry unique is that I trap things. I trap stones, our balls spin around, there’s a lot of movement. I don’t like to set stones, so I had to figure out a way to incorporate stones without having to set them. So it kind of spun off and became my signature,” she said.
In addition to Betsy’s beautiful jewelry, Betsy Frost Design offers home goods, clothing and many other gift options.
